When the first Golf appeared in 1974, it broke with tradition. Instead of continuing with the outdated rear-engine concept of the Beetle, the Golf featured a front-engine, front-wheel drive. VW had no idea that the car would soon represent an entire vehicle class. The design was also new. The angular shape was much more modern and in keeping with the 1970s and 1980s. However, it initially lacked some of today's standards, such as ABS, power steering, air conditioning, and power brakes; disc brakes were introduced in 1975. The Golf I was most successful in 1980. A total of 6.72 million units were produced between 1974 and 1983.
