The BMW C1 was an innovative scooter produced from 2000 to 2003 and distinguished by its unique safety concept. It was the first scooter with a roof and a safety cage designed to better protect the rider in the event of an accident. The C1 was equipped with a seat belt, so the rider did not have to wear a helmet, unlike on conventional motorcycles – in some countries, including Germany, this was legally permitted.
The BMW C1 was powered by a single-cylinder, four-stroke 125 cc or 176 cc engine, producing between 15 and 18 hp, depending on the model. The C1 was designed for urban use and offered good protection from wind and weather, making it particularly popular with commuters. Despite its technical innovations and safety-conscious approach, the C1 achieved limited commercial success, as its unusual design did not appeal to all riders.
Today, the BMW C1 is considered a pioneer of safety-oriented motorcycles and has achieved cult status among collectors and enthusiasts.
