In 1963/64, Richard Heydenreich created a top-of-the-line moped, the Hercules K 50, which initially produced 4.5 hp. Its features, such as the central tube frame and the five-speed, air-cooled engine, were retained even through numerous model updates. The K 50 RL featured the Hercules-typical "half-length" front swing arm and was the best-selling "open" 50cc motorcycle in West Germany at the time. The engines were always supplied by the parent company Sachs in Schweinfurt.

A dense service network and good performance made the Hercules K 50 RL attractive. Shortcomings in details did not deter buyers from making the K 50 series the best-selling moped. The purchase price and maintenance costs were able to compensate most
young customers only if parents or grandparents co-finance.

The 50cc models, sold only in Germany and Austria, with no power restrictions, are the dream of many young people. Until 1978, these machines, capable of speeds of around 90 km/h, could be ridden without a helmet after passing a test at age 16. The result: Accident rates are rising. A dense service network and good performance make the Hercules K 50 RL attractive.
