It's no coincidence that the Jaguar D-Type resembles a 1930s fighter plane. Aviation engineer Malcolm Sayers designed the D-Type as the first frameless Jaguar, with a self-supporting body made of riveted electron-ply sheets, similar to an airplane fuselage. The three-time Le Mans winner (1955, 56, and 57) also owes its excellent aerodynamics to the wind tunnel and Sayers's experience with light-alloy fuselages. Low weight, low drag, and disc brakes, also derived from aviation, made the Jaguar D-Types superior for their era. The tailplane improved straight-line stability at high speeds.
